Katarina Wit started skating when she was five. Then, her abilities became apparent and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she enrolled in an institution specifically designed for children with sporting talents. Here she first had a conversation with the trainer Jutta M ller. Witt became a star in 1982, after she was second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point forward she began to dominate the sport. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. She won a much closer competition after four years. The free skate she took was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of her performances in both the compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt is the first female figure skater to win the same competition twice, after Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in film as an actor, returned for figure skating, competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted fans despite not winning the medal. Witt was elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
